Yamaha DX200

FM Desktop Control Synthesizer Yamaha DX200 desktop FM synthesizer

Shortly after acquiring the AN200 synth, I decided I would like to get hold of its twin sister.

The DX200 is for all intents and purposes a DX7 inside a desktop groove box chassis. The daughter board inside the unit is the renowned PLG DX150 from Yamaha. Many of you will know that the DX7 was a very popular synth developed in the 80's. Prior to the DX, synths produced their sounds by manipulating analogue waveforms. DX synthesis or more accurately FM (frequency modulation) synthesis model their output sounds by tweaking the frequency modulation of a signal. Complex sounds imitating real world instruments as well as weird and metallic sounding tones are created by what is known as a carrier signal being affected by a modulated signal.

One of the most distinctive sounds in dance music came from the DX7. Whenever you listen to Robin S 'Show me love', you will hear the bass organ hook line. This is commonly known as the DX organ, and is featured as one of the pre-sets on the DX200.
