MicroKORG
Portable Synth/Vocoder
Throughout all the variety of synths and groove-boxes I've ever purchased and owned, this has to be my favourite of all time. I simply adore the vintage architecture and layout of the unit. Even there are several flaws in the machine such as the goose neck microphone and the small keyboard; these issues diminish when you consider and use the formidable sound shaping capabilities.
Like most synths these days, there is an array of preset sounds from a broad spectrum of electronic genres. If you're looking for that vintage funk line from classic 80's soul tracks, or perhaps the stacked synth sound from a 90's euphoric trance, then the MicroKORG provides a very amicable starting point to achieving those classic motifs.
There is a very reasonable vocoder facility integrated with this synth, and you can plug in a secondary mic to replace the rather standard goose neck. For the most part I use a Shure SM58 when utilising the vocoder.
There is some great opportunity to alter the presets using LFO's, filters and delays. There are two oscillators that affect the noise generator to produce the output sound. The waveforms of the oscillator can be varied from sine, triangle, square and S/H.
